Wait, wait. Don’t go. I know. The very word “dream” causes a significant portion of the population to feel bile rising in their throat. Or, perhaps not a physical revulsion, but just an extreme feeling of boredom and irritation.
I mentioned this at the beginning of our workshop yesterday: the fact that I receive fairly frequent requests for “more classes on dreams!” But I know, meanwhile, that a substantial group of people also hit DELETE on any email with that word in the subject line.
It’s too bad because every. single. time that we get into dreamwork, and the symbols and stories that arise while we sleep, we go to a different place. Things get truly interesting.
Here are some of the images that we explored during yesterday’s gathering:
Being chased in dreams
Being stuck in dreams
Trapping something scary under glass to suffocate it
A wound on the bottom of the foot—what’s the word for that…the bottom of the foot…?
We also heard from someone who “never dreams” and wanted to know what that meant, just before sharing a fascinating twist to their question that made me laugh.
I also read a quote from Jung, which I’ll share below in full.
But first, I want to announce that…
I’m starting a new book group for the fall!
Drum roll…
“Everything depends on the quality of the individual… one would think that the world had seen more than enough of what a well-disciplined mob can do in the hands of a single madman.”
—Carl Jung, The Undiscovered Self
Starting in October, we’ll dive into Jung’s masterpiece on the connection between human psychology and international events: The Undiscovered Self This is one of his final works and, undoubtedly, one of his greatest.
I hope you’ll join me!
All paid subscribers will get the reading assignments, live discussion links, and follow-up recordings.
We’ll start reading in September to prep for the first meeting in October. The plan is to read just 20 pages a month, with one live meeting each month to discuss. I learned from our last “slow read” that it was not slow enough at all! So I’m organizing this group read a bit differently and stretching things out.
If you don’t already have a copy of this excellent book, grab one soon.
More details to come!
As always, if finances prohibit a paid subscription but you’d love to participate, reply to this email or send me a note at satyadoylebyock[@]substack.com. I don’t ask for any explanation. If you can pay, please do (a ton of work goes into this newsletter and these events). If you can’t, just send me a note!
Now, here’s that quote from Jung that I read aloud on Sunday.
