"The Chaos that We Fear is the Very Thing that Can Free Us."

Our first live meeting for the Dancing in the Flames slow read

As always, I am richer for our time spent together. Thank you.

Our 90-minute session yesterday was rooted in our text, Dancing in the Flames. But it was also simply a gathering of souls in these times, all of us seeking another way of being within a very bleak status quo.

Not entirely by design, it was largely right-brained time, with dreams and memories, symbols, ancestors, and poetic readings washing over us like waves.

When we meet next on Sunday, May 18th at 4-5:30pm PDT / 7-8:30pm EDT (note the different time of day), for balance, I’ll call forth a bit more of the left-brain, rational experience of this reading. We’ll identify specific passages and page numbers and discuss the ideas behind them. We need both parts of ourselves to properly soak up the wisdom in these pages.

Here’s what unfolded yesterday:

  • I shared a bit about the call to explore this book, at this time, with this community, and my awe at your response.

  • I mentioned a Marion Woodman lecture from the ‘80s on The Chrysalis, which I love. You can listen to that here.

  • Then I invited a short period of silence and journaling to:

    • Identify one quote from the reading so far that has had a particular impact on you.

    • Write about the way this material has been working with you and on you so far. (No wrong answers!)

    • Formulate one specific question that has arisen as you read.

  • I requested volunteers to read the quote they selected from the book for a ritual invocation. We had seven readers—a sacred number that arises in this book all the time—and it was quite a powerful, poetic experience. Transformation everywhere!

  • For the remainder of our time, the bulk of our time, the group shared what this reading has been bringing up, weaving the personal with the political, the rational with the irrational, and the dream world with the natural world.

Please join us for Part 2 on May 18th, and then again for our author conversation with Elinor Dickson on June 1st! If you were already registered for today, the same link applies to these two gatherings. I’ll send reminder emails when the time comes.

The Men’s Group is next Sunday, May 4th! Register here.

Paid subscribers have access here to the full video from yesterday, plus the posts and discussion for our slow read, all past workshop recordings, and future gatherings (there’s lots more to come, which I’ll announce soon).
