A psychological look at the individualā€™s place in the collective from Jungian psychotherapist and author of ā€œQuarterlife: The Search for Self in Early Adulthood.ā€

About Satya

Iā€™m Satya Doyle Byock. Iā€™m a psychotherapist with a focus on Jungian Psychology, the journey of individuation, and the time of life I call Quarterlife. Iā€™m the author of Quarterlife: The Search for Self in Early Adulthood and the founder of The Salome Institute of Jungian Psychology, where I teach online. Iā€™m also the co-host of a (now completed) podcast exploring Carl Jungā€™s Red Book and its meaning for us today.

My work has been featured in places like The New York Times, The Guardian, NPR, LitHub, Maria Shriverā€™s Sunday Paper, and Oprah Daily, and Iā€™ve enjoyed some wonderful conversations on podcasts like BBC Womanā€™s Hour, Apple News in Conversation, NPR LifeKit, The Goop Podcast, Pulling the Thread, the Not Perfect Podcast, and many more.

Iā€™m honored to have been featured on some wonderful Substacks: with Anne Helen Peterson here and here; with Leslie Stephens here and here; and with Elise Loehnen here and here.

Before becoming a therapist, I studied history and social justice, issues of power and oppression, nonviolent action, race and ethnicity, and gender politics. Since I was a child, Iā€™ve sought to better understand the experience of existence and how to mitigate suffering within it.

I was raised in Montana, went to college in Portland, Oregon, spent an influential part of my Quarterlife years working in places like Colombia and Sri Lanka, and went to graduate school in California. I now live back in Portland, Oregon.

This newsletter comes out a few times a month. I explore topics of socially relevant psychology from a depth psychological lens, with roots in history; the journey of individuation, mythology and fairy tales, mental health in society, social justice, personal storytelling, divination, and religion.

Iā€™ll share most of what I write with all subscribers, though paid subscribers will have additional benefits:

  • Monthly Sunday gatherings online

  • 15% off of any courses I teach at The Salome Institue

  • Advance notice of in-person retreats

  • Being part of a brilliant, intergenerational community

  • Supporting my writing + creative time

I am always happy to provide scholarship subscriptions in 3-month increments if the monthly subscription is out of reach for you. I know these are not easy times for many people. I wonā€™t ask questions. Just send me a note if finances prevent you from subscribing.
